High Heels & Gum

2021

In this work, Orly Hummel takes an everyday object – women’s high heels, and subjects it to a process of abstraction and suspension. Presented in “The Maze”, part of the exhibition “Now Open” at Petach Tikva Museum of Art (2021), the shoes are transformed from functional items into visual signs: white, cold, and stripped of use—fragmented testimony to an absent human presence. The stretched chewing gum between them embodies both connection and disconnection, combining fragility with humor. The work reflects Hummel’s exploration of transience, imperfection, and collective memory.
