Patricia Urquiola

Born in 1961 in Obidedo, Spain. Her father was a successful engineer and entrepreneur that dreamt of being an architect and raised her to be a designer and architect. She studied in Faculdad de Arquitectura de Madrid and later in Polytechnico di Milan. The known designer Achille Castiglioni was her teacher and she continued to be his assistant in Polytechnico di Milano in Milan and at E.N.S.C.I in Paris. In 1998, she founded her own studio in Milan, still active today in the fields of design, architecture, art direction and exhibition production. She designs often for Moros and is known for her comfortable furniture with exceptional cushioning. This collaboration created a new approach to modular furniture – many of her furniture designs include elements that you can replace, change or rotate around to transform its appearance. She prefers non-formal way of living room design and unusual combinations of sofas and couches. The furniture she designs sets an intimate, cozy, inviting atmosphere and she describes herself as “Quite eclectic, ever-changing, and versatile. I like to think in different methods about design and architecture in the same time. I’m intrigued by behavior patterns, artistic technics and my personal life memories.” She’s one of the sole female characters in the predominantly male design world. She’s not a trendy designer but a designer that holds deep concepts of modernism and functionality. In 2001, her works were displayed in Milan’s design week. She describes her work process as a long, beautiful dance.
