Tom Dixon

Born in Sfax, Tunisia, Dixon is an auto-didact in the design world. He realized the potential in recycled materials and industrial waste and taught himself how to put it together into furniture. He learned through trial and error with no sketches in his own workshop or in his words: “Just when people started purchasing my work I understood I’m an alchemist, I can turn metal garbage into gold.” He started gaining a reputation and recognition and got an offer from the Capellini company that was interested in the S chair, an early model he developed while he was sculpting. They started manufacturing the chair in 1989 and it became an icon. In 1991, he established a studio and store called Space, where he sold his designs along with the products of other designers. In 2002, he established the “Tom Dixon” company. The company developes private collections of furniture and light fixtures in a contemporary styled. His work is presented in the world’s most prestige museums such as Boston Art Museum, London Design Museum, Pompidou center in Paris, the museum of modern art in NYC, the modern art museum in Tokyo and the Victoria and Albert museum in London.
